about
This song means more to me than any of my other original songs. I began writing it around a year ago, when the thought popped into my head to write a song for my grandma's birthday. What I thought would be a pretty quick endeavor turned out to take two months to write - it's not easy fitting eighty years of her stories into one song. I released my demo recording of the song last July on her birthday, and quickly it became a fan-favorite of my original songs.
I grew up next door to my grandma, and saw her pretty much everyday. She would tell me stories about what it was like when she was a little girl, at the farm, about getting into trouble with her siblings and walking to the schoolhouse (uphill in both directions). She also told me stories about the concentration that she was forced into when she was just a kid, and the horrors that went on there. She told me about her travels around Europe, her young adult life and going to dances and attending a household school; how she met my grandfather, an American soldier, and how she went to the US with him to start their family - my family. Half of the stories I didn't even believe...I mean, her life is a movie just waiting to win an Oscar.
Over the past year, this song has made at least one person cry every time I've performed it live. And this recording has allowed it to evolve into the song I pictured it to be when I wrote it. I absolutely cannot wait for you to hear it.
